The only thing that trumps water in the hierarchy of human necessities is oxygen. The average adult human body contains 50-65% water. Staying hydrated every day helps almost all the cells of the body function properly. Water even comes in handier because it has no sugar, calories, fat or carbohydrate.

However, as important as water is to human existence, a lot of people still ignore the health benefits and the need to stay hydrated every day. There are many health issues that can result when you do not drink enough water. Some of them are explained below:

Adequate water consumption helps the body remove toxins from the blood stream and aids good circulation. Water helps the circulatory system to function properly because the blood alone is not sufficient enough to fill all the arteries, veins and capillaries. When there is a drop in the blood pressure, it leads to a drop in the flow of oxygen to the brain which makes you dizzy and light headed, especially when you move suddenly or you stand up. If the blood pressure drops really low, major organs do not receive enough blood, which can then lead to a shock, and subsequently organ failure, which result to death within a few minutes or hours.



When you do not drink enough water, you get tired easily. Fatigue is the number one sign that you need to drink more water. This is because the heart will have to work harder to send oxygenated blood out through the bloodstream. Then, other organs too will not work effectively as they should. Water deficiency in the body slows enzyme activity in the body, which in turn causes fatigue and lethargy.

Water helps to carry waste products through to the kidney. Decreased water intake means you urinate less. When you urinate less, the urine stacks up in the bladder and when this happens, there is a higher chance of it becoming infected because bacteria travelling through the ureter multiply and cling to the wall easily. This increases the risk of bladder and lower urinary tract cancer or kidney stones.



When you do not drink enough water or when you are dehydrated, the body does not have enough fluid to process the food intake and keep the intestines hydrated. The body will not have enough water to get rid of solid waste, leading to constipation. It has also been proven that when waste products take longer time before exiting the body, and if during that time they come in contact with possible carcinogens within the intestines, there is an increased risk of developing colon cancer.

Thankfully, water has no calories and by itself cannot make you burn fat or lose weight. However, it is important when trying to have a healthy weight loss diet. Staying hydrated makes you feel fuller and helps the body get rid of waste products and toxins. The process of dehydration starts even before you feel the thirst. So, if you deprive your body of sufficient water, you will be losing out on these benefits of weight loss.

When you do not drink enough water, you put yourself at risk with pollutants and other particles in the air. The body also tightens the airways as a way to keep water in the body because the amount of histamine produced in the body makes it lose more water.


Studies have shown that dehydration can significantly increase problems with the joints. This happens because more toxins accumulate in the bloodstream when you are dehydrated, which then results to a diverse set of diseases and problems, one of which is rheumatism.
